I'm going to have to keep this post short. It's nearly midnight and I have to get up in six hours.
This morning, Paige and I got up early and had a delicious (and free) breakfast at the Hilton.
Paige had to head to the ship early for work study unfortunately, but I met up with some other SAS students and we headed into London together for one last day of exploring. They were both very nice and fun Chinese girls who are attending college in the United States. Diana Xinyi is studying Psychology in Minnesota and Yiting Zheng is majoring in Global Affairs in Connecticut.
Our first stop was 221 B Baker St. Home of the famous Sherlock Holmes.

We then went to the British Museum and got to see some pretty cool old stuff.

Actual Mummy. How cool is that? |

They even mummified cats! |

We then traveled to Trafalgar Square where there was an Indian festival going on. It was a unique and interesting experience to witness some of their traditions firsthand. A friendly Indian woman standing next to us explained that the festival was celebrated to worship the Indian gods. There was a lot of food, music and fun.
We then went to the National Gallery where I got to see the real life works of artists such as Monet, Rembrandt, Vermeer, da Vinci, Botticelli, Titian, Pissarro, Michelangelo, and (my favorite) Van Gogh! It was absolutely incredible. I saw Michelangelo's paintings and drawings with my own eyes! I was able to see the details and colors of Van Gogh's actual work! I have to say that if Nursing wasn't such a practical career, I would probably become an Art History major. I absolutely love this stuff!

(We weren't allowed to take pictures, so I "borrowed" this one from the internet.) |
Finally, we headed back to the Hilton where I have been since trying to re-pack and organize my two months worth of belongings (how does one fit that in a suitcase anyway?), dry some of the clothes I hand-washed yesterday (bad idea, they're still damp), and update you all on what I have been up to the past couple of days. I have to be in the lobby at 7:00 am tomorrow to help SAS load suitcases onto the shuttle bus. I'm doing work study with the campus store, and part of the job is helping set up orientation.
So tonight is my last night in London. This all feels so unreal that I have a hard time believing any of it has actually happened. The last few days were so amazing and fun and wonderful that I feel like my trip should be over. It feels like I should be on a plane back to Montana tomorrow instead of boarding the ship. It feels like this adventure should be ending, but it's actually only just beginning.
Next stop: Lisbon, Portugal

ReplyDeleteJealous...looks like so much fun, to have an adventure....
ReplyDeleteThanks! It is a lot of fun. And whoever this is, can you leave your name the next time so it doesn't come up as anonymous? Thanks!
DeleteGrandpa and Grandma took James, Jeremy and me to Washington DC when Grandpa was recognized as Small Business Man of Montana in 1989. It was a trip that left me in awe of our country's history and amazing monuments. But the art I saw on display at the Smithsonian was outstanding as well. Monet is my favorite of the Impressionist era and to see a sampling of his actual work, well I can't really describe it, other than to be blessed. However, to hear about your appreciation of art (and this remarkable world) is an even greater blessing for sure!
